The 134-acre area contains a playground, swimming pool, basketball courts, ball fields, a bandstand, a junior golf course and a sunken garden. The 38-foot-tall concrete Cascade Fountain next to the sunken garden is dedicated to the state's retired teachers.

Fairview 4900 Sumner St. Lincoln, NE 68506 USA Phone: (402) 481-8825 Fairview is at 4900 Sumner St. This combination Queen Anne and neoclassical brick house with stone details was the home of William Jennings Bryan who served as a U.S. congressman and as secretary of state in the early 20th century. The lower level contains interactive displays and appears as it did in 1908, the last year Bryan ran for president. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Great Plains Art Museum 12 St. & Q St. Lincoln, NE 68588 USA Phone: (402) 472-6220 Great Plains Art Museum, in Hewit Place at 1155 Q St., features a collection of bronze sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints and photographs. Artists represented in the collection include Albert Bierstadt, William de la Montagne Cary, Robert F. Gilder, William Henry Jackson, Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell and Olaf Wieghorst. Traveling exhibitions also are displayed. Allow 45 minutes minimum.

Historic Haymarket District 335 N. 8th St. Lincoln, NE 68508 USA Phone: (402) 435-7496 Historic Haymarket District is between 7th and 9th sts. and O and R sts. This restored turn-of-the-20th-century warehouse district offers shops, boutiques, eateries and entertainment. Beginning in the 1880s as an open-air market for produce and livestock, the Haymarket grew to include the post office and Lincoln's first city hall. This was one of the nation's first urban warehouse districts to be restored under the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Lincoln Children's Museum 1420 P St. Lincoln, NE 68508 USA Phone: (402) 477-0128 Lincoln Children's Museum is at 1420 P St. Hands-on displays and activities are designed for creative interaction and exploration. Exhibits explore arts, humanities, science, mathematics and commerce. A three-story apple tree, a real fire engine and airplane, a Mack truck, an interactive water exhibit, Prairie Dog Town and Tot Town are offered. Re-creations of an art studio, a grocery store, a pizza restaurant and a veterinarian's office also are featured. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Lincoln Children's Zoo 1222 S. 27th St. Lincoln, NE 68502 USA Phone: (402) 475-6741 Lincoln Children's Zoo, 1222 S. 27th St., offers more than 300 animals, including Amur leopards, Bactrian camels, crocodiles, naked mole rats, reindeer, river otters, sea horses, and various primates. The site contains thousands of plants and trees. A butterfly pavilion is open June through September. A scheduled demonstration features the antics of two harbor seals. Train and pony rides also are available.

Museum of Nebraska History 131 Centennial Mall S. Lincoln, NE 68508 USA Phone: (402) 471-4754 Museum of Nebraska History is at 15th and P sts. on the Centennial Mall. The museum's three floors of exhibits detail the history of Nebraska from prehistoric days to the present, featuring displays about pioneer life, politics, education and culture. Included are life-size reproductions of a Pawnee Indian earth lodge and a settler's sod house. The First Nebraskans exhibit depicts the history of the Plains Indians. Other highlights include a 1900s general store, a tribute to Nebraskans who fought in World War II, and Building the State of Nebraska 1867-1916. The History Adventure Center is an interactive, hands-on exhibit for children. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Nebraska State Capitol 15th St. & K St. Lincoln, NE 68508 USA Phone: (402) 471-0448 Nebraska State Capitol is at jct. 15th and K sts. An outstanding example of Modern architecture, the structure was built 1922-32 around an existing building as legislators continued to meet inside; it is one of the few state Capitols constructed on a "pay-as-you-go" basis. "The Sower," a 19-foot-tall bronze statue, tops the 400-foot-tall central tower. The colorful mosaic dome in the rotunda and the ornate walnut ceiling in the Supreme Court chamber exemplify the rich ornamentation both inside and outside. A sculpture of Abraham Lincoln was created by Daniel Chester French, who sculpted the statue in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Thursday afternoon tours of the Nebraska Governor's Mansion at 14th and H streets feature the entrance foyer, state drawing room, library, state dining room and the First Lady doll collection.

Home of the Cornhuskers, the university is divided between the east and city campuses. Points of interest include the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, the state museum and planetarium, art and textile galleries, an arboretum and botanical gardens. The Lied Center for Performing Arts hosts a variety of concerts and shows throughout the year.
